if you look around the Energy Hall, you can see that James Watt’s early engines were quite big, requiring the support of a large engine house. But in 1799, one of Watt’s gifted employees, William Murdoch, devisedthe bell-crank engine. It was the first compact, self-contained engine to be made available commercially. Very soon, a roaring trade sprang up in small engines, both new and second-hand.
